Blocks Reduction

Is it possible to create a block that dynamically shows 'channel stories' based on the current channel.  This as opposed to having one block per channel to show stories only for that channel.  If one has more than a handfull of channels, (as I have about 700 or so), then this becomes a nightmare. The goal of a CMS particualrly for newspapers and magazines is to organize tons of articles.  With the number of block increasing per channel, this is bound to be a major issue.

Wish : Please create a universal story listing block that shows stories for the current channel.  Or at least provide a snippet to configure a block to enable such functionality.
