Editions clarifications please

Two questions:

1.      What causes the Editions "Status" to be turned to Past Edition and how do you make it current again?

         I have even removed an Edition entry and re-entered and it sets to "Past Edition."

2.      How is the Editions manager supposed to work?

         Scenerio for an Edition entitled "Issue 1" there is the Home Page and 5 other pages all set to "Issue 1".

         Is it an ok process to clone Home Page, giving it "issue 2" for the Edition name?

         Then clone 3 of the 5 pages from Issue 1, making them part of "Issue 2"?

         Will the remaining 2 pages from "Issue 1" stay current and thus be seen thru the menus even though the new edition is different?  Or do you have to clone all the pages you want active for each new Edition?
