Presently, there is no special significance attached to the 'Archived' status except that Archived stories won't show up in the Headlines or Other Stories drop down for editions.
It's more of a placeholder for future work, such as (possibly) removing Archived stories from the channel's story listing and/or creating a new permission 'View archives' for those site users who want this flexibility.
